As human beings, we have thousands of thoughts each day and we all have our own thinking patterns and habits. Some of these thought patterns are based in thinking errors, or cognitive distortions, that can leave us with unnecessary feelings of stress, worry or sadness. Cognitive distortions are common, and sometimes we don’t even realize when these errors have popped up. However, by getting to know your particular error patterns you can begin to change them up through a process called cognitive restructuring. You can learn to identify your thinking errors and replace them with more helpful and evidence-based ways of thinking, often enabling better problem-solving and mood improvement.
