Addressing a Common Therapy Myth and Why Seeking Therapy Can Be Seen as a Sign of Strength

Unfortunately, there are many myths surrounding what therapy is and reasons for going to therapy. Many people seem to have a concern that going to therapy means they are weak or something is wrong with them as a human being. Now, while seeking psychotherapy indicates that you are struggling with something and need some help, my view is that seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness. It indicates that you recognize something isn’t working for you, are struggling to get through it on your own, and know that you could use some additional support, and so you then go about finding that help. This seems very practical and is a sign that you are willing to put effort and care into your own well-being. This can take courage at times, especially if you’re not sure what to expect or if you have mistaken beliefs about what therapy entails.
